The City of Great Bend currently treats Veterans Memorial Park as “permission only” for alcohol for events that happen at the park, such as Party in the Park.

At the Great Bend Events Center and Expo Complex there is a blanket exemption on no alcohol. There is no requirement for Great Bend City Council approval for any particular event and alcohol can be consumed at any time. At the Brit Spaugh Zoo and main hangar at the Municipal Airport, consumption must be approved by the council each time.

It was brought to the city’s attention that during summer adult slow-pitch softball games, there is alcohol consumed in the parking lots of Al Burns Field and Vets Park. Police Chief Steve Haulmark said there has been no trouble with the alcohol consumption.

One option the city council will discuss at the April 7 meeting is for the city is to make Vets Park permission only but then come back with a resolution to allow alcohol consumption during adult softball leagues.

The purpose of the discussion is to figure out the details the council wants in the ordinance, and then city administration will bring the ordinance back for consideration and approval at the meeting on April 21.
