A new sewing machine is one of several items Hoisington High School teacher Karla Reisner has on their "wish list" through the Country Music Teacher Classroom Initiative.

Karla Reisner, a Family and Consumer Science teacher at Hoisington High School, was chosen as a recipient of a new program called the Country Music Teacher Classroom Initiative. The program is designed to provide teachers with classroom supplies and project funds across the United States.

In addition to classroom supplies, Reisner’s class will also receive a song writing lesson with country music artist Jake Gill via personal visit or Zoom video.

"They want to get music back to the kids too," said Reisner. "Gill says music and song writing proves to be therapeutic to the kids. I was nominated for this and the next thing I know, I'm talking to Jake Gill."

Teachers create a wish list of desired items for their classroom and project materials needed throughout the year. The list is distributed weekly on social media as part of Gill’s ongoing initiative to serve children and now teachers throughout the world. Items can be purchased by anyone in the world and they will be delivered directly to Reisner in Hoisington.

Teaching her students life skills, Reisner added new sewing machines to her wish list.

"I have sewing machines sitting in my classroom that I used when I was in high school in the 1980s," Reisner said. "I put sewing machines and other things on the list to let kids enhance projects."
