According to AAA Kansas, the average price of a gallon of diesel fuel Wednesday was $3.46, down from $3.58 a year ago. The Barton County Landfill will not be paying that price. Tuesday morning, Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby went before the Barton County Commission to seek approval on a new fuel contract at $2.99 a gallon.

"The Barton County Landfill solicited bids to provide diesel fuel for operations starting July 1, 2024, for 25,000 gallons," she said. "This price would be good for the whole year or until the total gallons are used, whichever comes first."

Hamby sought bids from three fuel providers but American Plains Coop submitted the lone bid at $2.99. Hamby and commissioners expressed satisfaction with American Plains Coop, which will deliver fuel weekly as part of the contract. Hamby said the landfill's total diesel storage of 5,300 gallons may be a limiting factor on more bids as some companies are unable to provide the frequent deliveries of fuel.
