As of now, June 15 is a date many Kansans are looking forward to. Subject to change, that is the date the state will completely reopen with no gathering restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents in the Great Bend area received more news to celebrate as June 15 is the scheduled date to open the Wetlands Waterpark.
When city operations were altered and public access to buildings was prohibited in late March, there was talk of not opening the swimming pool at all this summer.
City Administrator Kendal Francis says after discussions with Great Bend Recreation Commission Aquatics Director Megan Hammeke, it is the city’s recommendation to open the pool mid-June.
"If we waited too much beyond June 15 to open, then I think we would need to seriously consider whether it was feasible to open the pool," said Francis. "It is my recommendation to open it June 15."
Typically, the pool opens Memorial Day weekend or the last weekend in May and closes in mid-August.
