This is normally the busiest time of the year at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, but thanks to COVID-19, all KWEC programs and events are cancelled until further notice as the Center remains closed to the public.
"This is not a great time for that for us because this is getting into our busiest season," said KWEC Director Curtis Wolf. "We are disappointed because all of us that work at the Center, this is what we live for..this time of year."
While the Center is closed, Wolf says Cheyenne Bottoms is not and states the wetlands offer the perfect place to enjoy nature in a proper social distancing setting.
"Cheyenne Bottoms is a great place to still go to," said Wolf. "With our stay-at-home orders, it is still feasible to get outdoors."
There have been 82 different species of birds observed at Cheyenne Bottoms over the past two weeks including bald eagles, Canadian geese and a couple of great horned owl nests.
"This is the time to get out there with great things to see," Wolf added.
