Whenever schools in Kansas do get back to a normal routine, Great Bend High School is excited to reveal one of their newest upgrades.
Last December, the USD 428 Board of Education approved the $158,400 purchase and installation of the new LED lights at Memorial Stadium. The lights purchased from Musco Lighting were installed earlier this month by Hammeke Electric.
In a trial run, USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton was amazed by how much brighter the lights are and their limited surrounding glow.
"They talk about how LED does not have the glow that the old style lighting does," said Thexton. "They were right."
The LED lights replace the old metal-halide lights and come with a reduction of spill light and glare by 50 percent or more so the neighbors around the field will not be blinded by the lights when events are happening.
The LEDs are expected to last 81,000 hours.
"The video does not do it justice," Thexton added about social media video posted. "The amount of coverage we have with these lights is amazing."
