Lady Panthers netters finish middle of pack at large McPherson tourney

Ten schools accounted for 11 tennis squads to McPherson Tuesday for a large meet. The host Bullpups scored 83 points to run away with the competition. Great Bend scored 38 points to finish seventh, just five points behind fifth-place Derby.

Singles players were once again put into the same bracket. Kaylin Wahlmeier posted a 3-2 record for sixth place. She downed her first opponent from Derby 8-3, then snuck by Goddard-Eisenhower 8-7 (6). She lost an 8-0 match to Maryn Sandbo, the third-place finisher from McPherson. Wahlmeier bounced back to beat Garden City 8-1 before losing to McPherson's Kyndall Sandbo 8-1 in the fifth-place match.

Paige Stacey opened her day in the singles bracket with an 8-0 win, then dropped an 8-2 set to the No. 2 seed and fourth-place finisher from Salina South. Stacey won an 8-0 match against Hutchinson, then defeated Salina South's other player 8-1 for 13th place.

Sam Mayers and Taylor Lashley went 2-3 in the doubles bracket for 12th place. They opened with an 8-1 win against Salina South before falling 8-6 loss to the No. 3 seed from Garden City. Mayers and Lashley rebounded with an 8-4 win against Liberal but lost their final two matches 8-5 to Salina South and 8-2 to McPherson.

Mac Lindberg and Darcy Feist finished 19th with a 2-2 record. The girls lost their first match to Hays 8-4 to drop to pool play. The girls defeated Hays and downed Salina South 8-6 in the 19th-place match.

The Lady Panthers return to action Thursday in Salina.
