Near the softball fields at Veterans Memorial Park, there is a small playground area that has a lone slide as its feature. The 20' x 20' area used to have swings, but those were removed years ago.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission Board approved the purchase of a 15-post Diamond Climber from Procor Play & Recreations. Great Bend Rec Director Chris Umphres said funds will come from the Kiwanis and Bill McKown Foundation.
"This is through Kiwanis and the Bill McKown fund," said Umphres. "With our foundation, we have money set aside from Bill McKown's memorial. It's probably six different years they've donated. We have plenty of money set aside for that. This would be in honor of him."
The playground equipment cost $21,000 and $4,000 will used to ship a truck full of mulch that will be used at the Vets playground and anywhere else where mulch is needed.
