Advancing Barton County Childcare, a committee through the Great Bend Economic Development, is hopeful construction on a new childcare center in Great Bend will be finished by next March.

Groundbreaking took place this past July, and Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger said all the details of opening the center are getting sorted out.

"We do have a site director hired," said Arnberger. "Her name is Kelsie Baxter. She has already started working with our consultants and KDHE to make sure everything is in perfect order when we're able to open the doors and launch this childcare center."

The $1.6 million facility is being constructed at the corner of 10th Street and K-96 Highway. Arnberger said the contractor put the underground utilities in place this week. The 6,500-square-foot daycare will accommodate up to 59 children, and the abccinc.org website will keep the public informed on updates.

"You can find the wait list when it comes out on the website," said Arnberger. "As we keep adding new and exciting things, we'll add that on there so you can get an idea what the center looks like and what it will offer."

After receiving a $2.23 million grant, Advancing Barton County Childcare announced the next childcare center will be constructed in Hoisington.
