SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kris Bubic threw seven scoreless innings, losing a no-hit bid in the sixth on an official scoring change, and Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run homer in the eighth as the Kansas City Royals got past the San Francisco Giants 3-1. Bubic carried his no-hit bid until there were two outs in the sixth. Wilmer Flores hit a grounder to the right side. Second baseman Michael Massey ranged to his left and slipped as the ball got past him. The play originally was ruled an error on Massey, then was changed to a single. Casey Schmitt’s clean double down the left-field line with one out in the seventh was the only other hit Bubic allowed.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Sonny Gray struck out 10 and threw six scoreless innings while Brendan Donovan had three hits Monday night, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to an 11-4 rain-delayed victory over the Detroit Tigers. Despite the loss, the Tigers still have the MLB-best record of 31-17. St. Louis has won 13 of its last 15 games while outscoring opponents 85-36 in that stretch. Gray allowed just three hits and one walk to pick up the win. Sean Guenther took the loss after facing three just batters in his first career major league start in his 38th big league game.

BOSTON (AP) — New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he will talk to Juan Soto about hustling out of the batter’s box after the slugger watched his would-be home run bounce off the Green Monster for a single Monday night against the Boston Red Sox. Leading off the sixth inning on a chilly night at Fenway Park with a 15 mph wind blowing in from left field, Soto hit a 102 mph line drive to left and stood watching as it sailed toward the Green Monster. The ball hit about two-thirds of the way up the 37-foot wall. Soto denied lollygagging on the basepaths.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech men's basketball coach Grant McCasland has agreed on a new contract that goes through the 2030-31 season. The school announced the move Monday. The Red Raiders were 28-9 this past season and made the NCAA Elite Eight. They finished second in the Big 12 standings behind national runner-up Houston, and were the only team to beat the Cougars in conference play. McCasland is 51-20 at Texas Tech, and has gotten a contract extension after each of his first two seasons. He initially got a six-year deal when hired two years ago after six seasons as head coach at North Texas.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Shedeur Sanders reached his next NFL milestone on Monday as he signed his rookie contract with the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland traded up with Seattle to take Sanders in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick and end the drama as the draft’s most recognizable player fell to the third day. Sanders will be part of a four-way competition for the Browns starting quarterback spot. Cleveland acquired former Steelers first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett in a trade with Philadelphia at the start of free agency on March 12. The Browns signed Joe Flacco last month, who went 4-1 as a starter in 2023 and led the Browns to the playoffs for only the fourth time since their return. Cleveland also selected Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel late in the third round.

UNDATED (AP) — Jockeying for NCAA Tournament bids ramps up in college baseball this week with conference tournaments taking center stage. Top seeds in the power conferences are Georgia Tech in the ACC, Oregon in the Big Ten, West Virginia in the Big 12 and Texas in the SEC. Tournament champions in 29 conferences will be automatic qualifiers in the 64-team national tournament. Regional hosts will be announced Sunday and the rest of the field next Monday. The College World Series is June 13 through June 22 or 23 in Omaha, Nebraska.

UNDATED (AP) — Over the past three months, a number of U.S. colleges have added or dropped entire sports programs on the eve of dramatic changes coming to college athletics under the $2.8 billion NCAA settlement. UTEP dropped women’s tennis, Cal Poly discontinued swimming and diving, Marquette added women’s swimming and Grand Canyon shuttered a historically dominant men’s volleyball program. It was a dizzying set of decisions that appears to offer no pattern except one: Every school is facing a choice on which programs to carry forward once the money really starts flowing.

UNDATED (AP) — The fate of the tush push will be up for discussion again along with the NFL’s history of giving division champions with mediocre records home field in the playoffs. There will be a new topic as well when NFL owners gather Tuesday and Wednesday at the headquarters of the Minnesota Vikings. The league has proposed allowing its players to participate in flag football when the sport makes its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028. Owners were set to vote on Philadelphia's famous tush push last month, but tabled the issue. The league also is discussing using records for playoff seeding rather than guaranteeing higher seeds for division champions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Super Bowl championship coach Nick Sirianni to a multi-year extension. Terms of the contract announced Monday were not revealed. Sirianni had one year left on his existing contract. Sirianni is 48-20 and has made the playoffs in all four seasons with the Eagles. He led the Eagles to the Super Bowl in the 2022 season where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. Sirianni and the Eagles won the rematch against Kansas City in this past season’s Super Bowl.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks have faced each other eight times in the postseason. Those matchups have produced some memorable NBA moments involving Reggie Miller, Spike Lee and others. With the teams set to meet again in the Eastern Conference finals beginning Wednesday, a look at some of those notable highlights.
