MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Arsenal passed the biggest test of its Premier League title defense so far by rallying to a 2-1 win against Chelsea. Martin Odegaard struck a 50th-minute winner at the Emirates Stadium after Morgan Rogers had given Chelsea an early lead. Kai Havertz equalized in the first half for Arsenal, which has a 100% record after three games and moved level at the top of the standings with Manchester City. Manchester United’s difficult start to the season continued with a 2-2 draw at Everton despite twice leading at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
ANN ABOR, Mich. (AP) — Given an unlikely second chance at a game-ending Hail Mary, Bryce Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard touchdown pass that lifted No. 16 Michigan over Western Michigan 13-12. The Wolverines were 27 1/2-point favorites in coach Kyle Whittingham’s debut. The Broncos thought they’d secured a historic upset when Underwood’s first Hail Mary sailed out of bounds with the clock expired. WMU players were already on the field celebrating when officials called for a review. TV replays showed the clock hitting zero before the ball hit the hands of a Western Michigan defender, but officials ruled there was a second left.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Lane Kiffin era at LSU began with a resounding 51-10 victory over Clemson. Sam Leavitt complemented his 113 yards and two touchdowns rushing with 230 yards and a TD passing, Dilin Jones rushed for 113 yards and two TDs and edge rusher Jordan Ross returned an interception for a score for No. 11 LSU. LSU finished with 632 yards on offense while handing Clemson its worst loss in about 30 years. LSU led 51-3 before Clemson surpassed 100 yards of total offense while driving for its only touchdown with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election, world soccer’s governing body said. Infantino has faced increasing pressure over his failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup. Despite widespread calls for him to step down FIFA said Infantino will seek next year to win a fourth and final term in office through 2031. European soccer’s governing body UEFA has led the calls for Infantino to go, saying it had lost confidence in him.
MONZA, Italy (AP) — Kimi Antonelli has won the Italian Grand Prix, despite having started 19th on the grid. It took the Mercedes driver fewer than 17 laps to fight his way to the front. The rest of the race was spent tussling with teammate and title rival George Russell for the lead. Antonelli passed him for the final time with three laps remaining, going on to become the first Italian to win at Monza in 60 years. That at least gave the crowd something to cheer about after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out of the scuderia’s home race early on. In the other Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton finished sixth.
NEW YORK (AP) — Solving some early struggles holding serve, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka overpowered Taylor Townsend to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. Townsend broke Sabalenka three times in the two-time defending champion’s first four service games as she looked to spring the upset. Sabalenka found a groove, regained her confidence and won 6-4, 6-3. Men's second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz faces Tommy Paul in the second match of the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz has dropped just one set through three rounds in his first tournament back following a wrist injury.
Dan Hicks thought it was incredible when he reached 30 years at NBC Sports. As he reaches another milestone, he considers it pretty remarkable. Hicks begins his 35th season at NBC on Sunday night when Notre Dame faces Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Besides calling Notre Dame football, Hicks is best known as the lead announcer for golf, as well as swimming and skiing at the Olympics. Hicks has become one of NBC's steady play-by-play voices despite not having done it before arriving at the network in 1992 after three years at CNN.
BERLIN (AP) — China needed overtime to edge the Czech Republic 74-70 in a thrilling game at the Women’s Basketball World Cup. Han Xu has scored 22 points and drew China level at 53-53 in the final quarter after her team had trailed for most of the game. Emma Meesseman completed the scoring as European champion Belgium (2-0) booked its place in the final phase with a comfortable 76-64 win over Puerto Rico (0-2). Australia reached the final phase with a physical 87-71 win over Turkey. Australia next plays Belgium to decide which progresses directly to the quarterfinals as group winner. Later, the United States plays Italy. The U.S. hasn’t lost a game at the World Cup since the 2006 tournament.
And to think, Kyle Whittingham said he wanted to put an end to all the drama around Michigan. Nobody could have scripted a more dramatic finish to the former Utah coach’s Michigan debut. No. 16 Michigan beat Western Michigan 13-12 on Saturday only after it was ruled that a second remained following Bryce Underwood’s unsuccessful Hail Mary attempt, even though the scoreboard clock indicated no time was left. Given a second chance, Underwood and JJ Buchanan connected on a remarkable 47-yard touchdown.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Dante Moore threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, and the No. 2 Oregon Ducks overcame a slow start to down resilient Boise State 34-27 in the season opener for both teams. After trading field goals to tie the game at 27 in the fourth quarter, Dakorien Moore scored on a 62-yard reception to give the Ducks the lead with 7:51 left and Oregon held on for the victory. Oregon has won 16 straight season openers at Autzen Stadium
