Great Bend city crews will be flushing hydrants

Posted Jul 10, 2024 11:10 AM

Great Bend city crews will be flushing and inspecting fire hydrants starting this month.

These activities will cause water to be released into the curb and gutters across town. Large amounts of running water due to flushing hydrants will only occur during normal business hours.

Over time, water that is sitting in a fire hydrant that has not been used recently can become discolored due to rust. When flushing, much of this water will be flushed out of the hydrant, but a small percentage of it will remain in the water mains. This can lead to discolored water being pulled into private service connections. Although it may have a color, the water is still safe to drink and cook with.

If off-colored water is noticed, the best solution is to flush all the lines in the service until the water becomes clear again.

Neighborhoods that will be affected by the first round of flushing will be:

  1. Southeast Corner of town
  2. Stoneridge
  3. Cherry Place and Eisenhower area
  4. Twin Lakes
