From the League of Women Voters of Great Bend, Barton County
This Giving Tuesday, the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Great Bend, Barton County, is rallying community members to help fuel the future of democracy. As a nonpartisan organization committed to voter education and advocacy, the League's participation in this global day of giving underscores its continued dedication to fostering an informed, engaged electorate.
A Legacy of Empowerment Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters was born out of the suffrage movement and has spent over a century championing voter rights, election reform, and public policy. Through its nonpartisan approach, the League has played a crucial role in educating voters, promoting election transparency, and advocating for policies that strengthen democracy. While the organization was originally women-only, men have been invited to join since the mid-1970s, reflecting the League’s inclusive and bipartisan mission.
Recent Community Engagement
In the past year, the LWV of Great Bend has been busy engaging the local community and encouraging active participation in the democratic process. The League hosted two well-attended candidate forums at the Great Bend Senior Center during the August primaries, set up an educational booth at the Summer Street Stroll, and participated in the Business Showcase at the Panther Athletic Center.
League members also reached out to local youth through voter registration efforts at Great Bend High School and Barton Community College. In a first for the district, the election officer and deputy brought voting machines to Great Bend High School, where more than 150 students had the opportunity to cast mock ballots on age-related topics. These efforts are part of the League’s ongoing mission to educate and engage young voters.
In addition, League members are currently participating in two study groups focused on pressing issues in our community—School Finance and Election Integrity. These study groups aim to deepen the League's understanding of these critical topics and ultimately finalize a written position that will guide future advocacy efforts.
How Your Contribution Makes a Difference
The funds raised on Giving Tuesday will directly support the League’s ongoing work to educate voters and empower communities. Contributions will help create educational materials, host candidate forums, and organize events that promote civic engagement. The League is also working to establish a scholarship program for local high school seniors who plan to attend Barton Community College, ensuring the next generation of leaders has the support they need to succeed.
