July statistics from the Kansas Department of Labor showed a slight increase in the unemployment rate in Barton County from 3.7 percent in June to 3.9 percent in July. The jump was even bigger in Rush County, with a move from 3.3 percent in June to 4.1 percent in July. Barton County has several job openings available, and Brenda Kaiser, human resources director with the county, says whether applying there or elsewhere, there are good habits to keep when applying for a job.
"You just want to make sure you update your email address," she said. "Any email address you might use on a dating website would not be recommended if you're seeking a professional job. Set up a professional email address."
The same can be said for outgoing voice messages on a phone, and Kaiser said it's important to leave space for potential employers to leave a voicemail if the call is missed. Should an applicant reach the interview stage, Kaiser said it's imperative to be on time and wear a proper outfit.
"Dress for the position you want to have," she said. "Always step it up the first couple of days. If it's more casual, you can always take it down a notch but you want to set a good impression right off the bat."
Some job search engines allow applicants to upload a cover letter and resume. Kaiser said to be mindful of employers who also want an application filled out and submitted. Not doing so may warn potential employers about an applicant's inattention to detail and inability to follow instructions.
