The list of things to do in Great Bend will soon be growing.

Hatchet Axtion will be opening soon downtown where patrons can compete in ax throwing. Sage Cauley and Johan Sanchez partnered to bring the popularity-growing competition to town. The two were ax throwing in the Kansas City area, and Cauley felt the concept of the activity would have success in Great Bend.

"We were talking about how there is not a lot of things to do in Great Bend for younger people," said Cauley. "We thought, why not bring ax throwing to Great Bend?!"

Hatchet Axtion is located at 1210 Main Street, just south of the courthouse square. The building sat vacant for a number of years, but Cauley and Sanchez have been renovating the inside for the past three months.

Cauley said the hope is to open the business June 11, but they’re still waiting on a few details to lock in that opening date.

"Customers will be able to keep score through iPads that are cast to monitors," said Cauley. "We'll have sports games playing on the televisions throughout the building. Similar to bowling, you'll end up in a single lane with up to four people. You'll be throwing a hatchet, tomahawk or ax down a 12-foot lane to a target.

Hatchet Axtion will sell soda and bottled water as customers pay to ax throw in hour increments. Cauley, 20 years old, said they will have to wait at least another year before they consider getting a liquor license to sell alcohol.

To compete and throw the axes, customers will need to be 12 years of age or older. Those between the ages of 12 and 18, will need a parent or guardian to sign a waiver and be present while the children play.

Hatchet Axtion also plans on creating a “kids zone” for children under 12.
