The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Cold Weather Advisory for central Kansas as an Arctic system moves into the region, bringing dangerously low temperatures and the potential for accumulating snow.

The National Weather Service says the Cold Weather Advisory takes effect at 6 a.m. Friday and continues through noon Monday, with bitter temperatures and persistent wind chills expected. The advisory reflects hazardous cold that could pose a risk to people and animals without adequate protection.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from noon Friday until noon Sunday, signaling that significant winter weather including snow and bitter wind chills is expected. Forecasters warn that blustery conditions, combined with gusty winds, could reduce visibility and make travel difficult.

Temperatures through the weekend are forecast to remain well below freezing, with daytime highs near or below 10 degrees and overnight lows dipping below zero. Snow is likely Friday night into Saturday, with wind chill values possibly plunging into the danger zone. Residents are urged to prepare for slick roads, hazardous driving, and extreme cold.

The NWS recommends that people limit outdoor exposure, check on vulnerable neighbors, and ensure pets and livestock have adequate shelter. Motorists should carry emergency supplies and allow extra time for winter travel.
