Zenner USA crews will return to Great Bend next week to continue the
installation of automated meter reading for the city’s water meters. The $2.46
million project requires all the water meters to be installed with an antenna
for the Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI).
Interim City Administrator Logan Burns said Zenner has approximately 500
structures left in Great Bend’s third cycle before moving on to the fourth and
final cycle.
"Cycle four will be from Main Street to McKinley, and between Broadway and 32nd Street," said Burns. "This will be the largest cycle that we have so far."
The new technology will provide more accurate meter reads and avoid the high
turnover rate with staff assigned to reading the meters.
There are approximately 6,500 commercial and residential water meters in the
city’s service area. The AMI system is expected to be operating sometime in
February.
