As families gather to celebrate Independence Day and America's 250th birthday, a few simple safety precautions can help make the holiday enjoyable for everyone.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers several recommendations to reduce the risk of injuries and fires while using consumer fireworks.

Safety tips include:

  1. Always read and follow the instructions on the fireworks packaging.
  2. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby before lighting fireworks.
  3. Light one firework at a time and move away quickly after lighting it.
  4. Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  5. Never attempt to relight a firework that doesn't ignite. Wait several minutes, then soak it with water before disposing of it.
  6. Keep spectators a safe distance from the area where fireworks are being used.
  7. Never allow young children to handle or light fireworks alone. Sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures and can cause serious burns.
  8. Avoid using fireworks near homes, vehicles, dry grass or other combustible materials.
  9. Once fireworks have been used, soak them thoroughly with water before placing them in the trash.
  10. If someone is injured or a fire starts, call 911 immediately.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission also reminds families to keep pets indoors during fireworks displays, as loud noises can cause anxiety and increase the likelihood that animals will run away.

By following a few basic precautions, families can help make this Independence Day celebration a safe and memorable one.
