From the city of Great Bend

An extra day of fireworks is only part of this year's big July 4 celebration in Great Bend. The city's expanded fireworks display is scheduled for Friday, July 3, with gates opening at 7:30 p.m. and the pre-show airing at 8:30 p.m. on 100.7 Eagle Country. The fireworks display is scheduled to start around 9:45 p.m. pending light and weather conditions.

In addition, Kat King of Flavored Celebrations is making a massive patriotic cake in honor of America 250 that will be on display at the Great Bend Public Library (GBPL) from 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Kansas Senator Tory Blew will be in attendance to speak about the importance of America 250 before the cake cutting ceremony.

The GBPL also invites the public to come make their own barbeque rub between June 29-July 3. Supplies are limited and are given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The City of Great Bend and Great Bend Economic Development are also teaming up to present a Fourth of July Porch Decorating Contest running from June 29-July 2. Participants must register using the online form available on the City’s website under the events page.

Porches must be fully decorated by Thursday, July 2, to be considered for judging. Winners will be announced during the cake cutting ceremony and on social media on July 3. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries, with first place winning a $100 Chamber certificate, second place earning a $50 Chamber certificate and third place receiving a $25 Chamber certificate.
