The Great Bend City Council approved $40,000 in additional funding for an outside contractor to finish crack sealing street in the southeast section of Great Bend.
Circle C Pavers, already approved for the crack seal project, stated that due to the crack sizes, more material is needed than originally estimated. There were approximately 70 blocks left to complete.
Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley said the contractor bids the project based on pounds of material that will be needed, not a dollar amount.
"In the years past, we go by the square yardage, and then you multiple that by usually a half pound per square yard," said Cauley. "The contractor guarantees a certain amount of pounds."
An additional 20,000 pounds of material for $40,000 will finish up the job in preparation for next year's chip and seal project.
Crack sealing fills the cracks with a rubber material that prevents moisture from getting into the cracks.
The change order is funded through the 1/4-cent sales tax.
