Holidays on the weekends come and go as the calendar shifts each year. This year, Halloween will fall on a Friday. With no school in session that day in Ellinwood, Chamber President Nancy Baird said there will be some changes to this year's big event on Main Street.
"It's a long-standing tradition that the grade school, St. Joseph School, and St. John Child Development Center do a parade down Main Street," she said. "This year, there is no school on Oct. 30 and 31, so that parade is actually going to be on Wednesday, Oct. 29."
The parade will begin around 2:30 p.m. Local businesses set up displays and hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters, but Baird said the event is not limited to those downtown businesses.
"If you're someone who maybe does not get a lot of trick-or-treaters at your house, or you just love to see kids in costume, you are welcome," she said. "You can set up a table and pass out candy, or you're welcome to park on Main Street and just watch the kids trick-or-treat by. They would love that."
Baird also reminds Halloween fans of other seasonal opportunities. Barton Community College will host its fifth annual Haunting on the Hill from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Fine Arts Building. Various activities will be available. Ellinwood Community Church will again host its Trunk-or-Treat on Halloween night from 6 p.m. until the candy runs out around 7 p.m. Those wanting to hand out candy are encouraged to decorate their car trunks or trucks and bring enough candy to hand out to 325-350 trick-or-treaters.
