MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open before her third-round match against Maddison Inglis. She announced the decision on social media, citing a need to address a physical issue after her last match. Osaka expressed disappointment, saying the run meant a lot to her, but she couldn't risk further injury. Her entrance earlier in the tournament went viral due to her unique outfit. In the second round, she defeated Sorana Cirstea in a tense match that ended with a frosty exchange. In comments later published by the tournament, Osaka says she had a left abdominal issue.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is accusing Mississippi coach Pete Golding of tampering with transfer player Luke Ferrelli. Swinney said Friday he has forwarded evidence to the NCAA. The longtime Tigers coach says, “If you tamper with my players, I'm going to turn you in.” Swinney described how Ferrelli, a linebacker, committed to Clemson on Jan. 6 and enrolled. Two weeks later, Ferrelli reentered the transfer portal and committed to Ole Miss. Swinney says he obtained text messages that Golding sent to Ferrelli after the linebacker had enrolled at Clemson.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Philip Rivers has interviewed with the Buffalo Bills for their head coaching job. It's the latest twist in a busy couple of months for one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. The 44-year-old Rivers has no previous NFL coaching experience, having worked since his initial retirement from the league as a high school coach in his native Alabama. Last month, he ended his five-year retirement and finished the season with the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers was the fourth candidate to interview since the Bills launched their search on Wednesday. Sean McDermott was fired Monday after going 98-50 and reaching the playoffs eight times in nine seasons.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic continues to pile up tennis records. He tallied his record-extending 400th Grand Slam singles win by defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in the Australian Open's third round on Saturday. This victory also marked his 102nd win at the Australian Open, equaling Roger Federer's record for most match wins at the tournament. Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, is aiming for a 25th major title and is determined to become the most decorated player in history. He overcame challenges in the third set, including a tumble and facing set points. Djokovic apologized for one moment late in the second set. He swiped the ball angrily and it narrowly missed a ball girl crouching at the net post.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Stan Wawrinka bids farewell to the Australian Open after losing to Taylor Fritz. On Saturday, the 40-year-old shared beers with the tournament director and saluted the crowd. Wawrinka, who won his first Grand Slam title in Australia in 2014, became the first man over 40 to reach the third round of a Grand Slam since 1978. He says 2026 will be his last year on the professional circuit but has emphasized it's just a farewell tour. Fritz advanced to face Lorenzo Musetti in the Round of 16. Fritz praised Wawrinka's passion and drive.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo thinks he will be out for an extended period after hurting his right calf again after a similar injury already caused him to miss eight games earlier this season. Antetokounmpo had his right calf wrapped in the first half of a 102-100 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Antetokounmpo didn’t appear comfortable the rest of the night and left for good with 34 seconds remaining. The two-time MVP said he expected to undergo an MRI on Saturday. Denver’s Aaron Gordon scored 13 points in the first half before sitting out the second half with a right hamstring strain.

LA QUINTA, Calif (AP) — Scottie Scheffler is No. 1 in the world and tied for the lead at The American Express. And that's not what caused the big buzz. Blades Brown was 6 feet away from becoming the youngest player to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour. The 18-year-old narrowly missed. He settled for a career-low 60 on Friday and is tied with Scheffler going into the weekend. Scheffler wasn't particularly sharp but still shot a 64 in the second round of his 2026 debut. Brown was playing his sixth competitive round in as many days. He played a Korn Ferry Tour event in the Bahamas that finished Wednesday.

SPINDLERUV MLYN, Czech Republic (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin has earned a place on the podium of a World Cup giant slalom for the first time in two years. The American finished third in the last GS before the Milan Cortina Olympics. The race was won by defending Olympic champion Sara Hector of Sweden. Shiffrin trailed Hector by 0.23 seconds and the American shared the podium with second-placed teammate Paula Moltzan. Shiffrin holds the women’s record for most career World Cup GS wins with 22 but hadn’t had a top-three result in 11 races since coming runner-up at a race in Slovakia in January 2024.

One-time NFL MVP and longtime San Francisco 49ers quarterback John Brodie has died at the age of 90. The 49ers said Brodie’s family said he died Friday. Brodie had a stroke in 2000. Brodie played for the 49ers from 1957-73 after breaking every major passing record at Stanford. He later played on the Senior PGA Tour and won the 1991 Security Pacific Senior Classic. Brodie’s 17 seasons still represent a 49ers franchise record and his 31,548 yards passing rank second to Joe Montana on San Francisco's career passing list. When Brodie retired after the 1973 season, he trailed only Johnny Unitas and Fran Tarkenton in yards passing.

The College Football Playoff will remain at 12 teams after the commissioners of the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten couldn’t come up with a compromise for expansion. The CFP Management Committee announced Friday the 12-team format would stay the same for the 2026-27 season. The decision provides additional time for evaluation and discussion on the current format and potential changes in the future. The CFP went from four teams to 12 teams for the 2024 season, and the two most powerful conferences favored further expansion but could not agree on a number.
