LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes set the NFL record for total yards in a season, and the Kansas City Chiefs rolled to a 31-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders to lock up the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Mahomes passed for 202 yards and rushed for 29 against the Raiders, giving him 5,608 total yards for the season. That surpassed the record of 5,562 yards set by Drew Brees in 2011 with the New Orleans Saints. The Chiefs will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Kansas City is 14-3, matching its franchise record for regular-season victories. The Raiders finished 6-11.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars are AFC South champions for the first time in five years. They secured the title with a 20-16 victory against rival Tennessee on Saturday night in a win-and-in game that turned on Josh Allen’s 37-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 2:51 remaining. Rayshawn Jenkins forced Josh Dobbs’ fumble, and Allen scooped up the bouncing ball and ran, untouched, the other way for a lead that held up against the Titans in the regular-season finale for both. Dobbs fumbled again on the ensuing possession, and the Jaguars started to celebrate their most significant regular-season victory in franchise history.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Based solely on the recruiting rankings, this national championship game between No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 TCU is the most lopsided in the nine-year history of the College Football Playoff. The defending national champion Bulldogs face the upstart Horned Frogs on Monday night at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The rosters are built differently in recruiting, but both teams pride themselves in player development. Georgia has 15 players who were five-star recruits on its roster and 53 who were four stars. TCU has one five-star and 16 four-stars.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Freshman Gradey Dick scored 16 points, Jalen Wilson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 3 Kansas rode a hot start to a 76-62 victory over West Virginia. Kansas has won eight straight and avoided the nail-biting finishes of its first two conference games. KJ Adams added 14 points, Kevin McCullar finished with 12 and Dajuan Harris 11 for the Jayhawks. Tre Mitchell scored 15 points, Erik Stevenson added 12 and Emmitt Matthews had 11 points for West Virginia. The Mountaineers have lost three straight. Kansas made nine of their first 11 field goals to jump ahead 22-10. The lead never got below five points after that.
WACO, Texas (AP) — Ismael Massoud hit a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left in overtime and Kansas State extended its winning streak to eight games with a 97-95 victory night at No. 19 Baylor. New Wildcats head coach Jerome Tang was on Baylor staff the past 19 seasons. Markquis Nowell had 32 points for the 14-1 Wildcats, and his 14th assist of the game was on the go-ahead 3 by Massoud. Keyontae Johnson added 24 points for K-State, which matched its best overall start since 1958-59. Adam Flagler had 23 points and Keyonte George 22 for Baylor, which is 10-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Gabe Kalscheur scored 15 points, including a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining, and No. 25 Iowa State beat No. 17 TCU 69-67. Kalscheur’s game-winner from way past the arc came just after TCU had just claimed the lead for the first time since early in the first half. Mike Miles led TCU with 18 points, including two of three free throws with 23 seconds for a one-point lead. Iowa State had three players score 10 points.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Marcus Carr scored 12 points to help No. 6 Texas defeat Oklahoma State 56-46 in the Longhorns' first game since coach Chris Beard was fired. Beard faces a felony domestic family violence charge stemming from a Dec. 12 incident involving his fiancée. Texas improved to 6-1 under interim coach Rodney Terry. The Longhorns were coming off a 116-103 loss to Kansas State. Kalib Boone had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma State.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Doctors describe Damar Hamlin’s neurological function as “excellent,” and the Buffalo Bills safety is still making progress in his recovery. He was resuscitated on the field in a game at Cincinnati on Monday. The Bills' daily update also says Hamlin continues to breathe on his own but remains in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. There was a tweet on the 24-year-old’s verified Twitter account Saturday evening thanking all who have “reached out and prayed” and saying the response to his injury will make him stronger. Hamlin took a major step forward in his recovery Friday when he was taken off a ventilator and showed an ability to speak.
KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin has matched Lindsey Vonn’s women’s World Cup skiing record with her 82nd win. Shiffrin led from start to finish to win a giant slalom and can now break Vonn’s mark in a night slalom scheduled for Flachau, Austria, on Tuesday. Already with eight wins this season, Shiffrin is also quickly approaching Ingemar Stenmark’s overall record between men and women of 86 victories. Vonn retired four years ago when injuries ended her pursuit of Stenmark.
KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — The back nine at Kapalua is where the Sentry Tournament of Champions comes to life. That's where Collin Morikawa might have ended it on Saturday. Morikawa ran off four birdies over his last five holes for a 65. That gives him a six-shot lead going into the final round at Kapalua. No one has lost a final-round lead that large since the tournament moved to Maui in 1999. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and J.J. Spaun were six shots behind. It looks hopeless. Morikawa is smooth with putter and always great with the irons.
