Through the Barton County Health Department’s maternal program, local health officials will be offering “Becoming a Mom” classes. The childbirth education consists of one class per week for six weeks.

Bev Frizell, with the Health Department, said the course will include discussion on health pregnancy, labor and delivery, infant feeding, infant care, postpartum health for mothers and pregnancy nutrition.

"We talk a lot about the 'my plate' and eating appropriate servings of each of the food groups," said Frizell. "There are certain nutrients that are more important for pregnant women. They need more folic acid and iron. We also like to limit caffeine."

The next “Becoming a Mom” session will begin on July 18. To preregister, contact the Barton County Health Department at 620-793-1902.
