Three separate proclamations were approved by the Barton County Commission on Tuesday, including the signing off on “National Public Health Week.” Krista and Dr. Perry Smith are members of the Health Department Advisory Committee.
"One of the many strengths of the Health Department is the collaboration of services with other county agencies," said Smith. "They strive so hard to increase access to public health by providing as many grants as possible that helps keep the county cost lower. They're a very dedicated and innovative staff."
Smith noted National Public Health Week is celebrating 30 years, and public health officials are proud of the fact that Americans live an average of 35 years longer today than when the American Public Health Association was founded over 150 years ago.
"Public health gives citizens the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest with good health, local resources and an environment that values each segment of our population."
In the proclamation, the Smiths noted contributions to that longevity include advancements in testing, treatment and medicines, improvements in the availability and nutritional value of foods, safer water and building material and better care and treatment of own bodies.
National Public Health Week is April 7 – April 13.
