The City of Russell announced that a sidewalk project is underway to enhance pedestrian safety at the intersection of 8th Street and Fossil Street, continuing along State Street to Russell High School. Enhanced safety provisions include fully reconstructing the sidewalk, new pavement markings, and the addition of pedestrian crossing signage.
This project will cause some temporary traffic changes and street closures as it progresses. The project started June 3 and includes:
• Traffic on Fossil Street around the 8th Street and State Street intersection will be reduced to two (2) lanes, eliminating the middle turn lane.
• The 300 block of E. 8th Street will be closed to thru traffic. Those wishing to access the Police Department will have to do so from the 8th and Elm Street intersection.
Other traffic changes and street closures may be necessary during this project. Those changes will be publicized as needed. This project is estimated to be completed by the end of August.
This project was funded completely through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) Kansas Active Transportation Enhancement Program.
