
Betty Sue Chlumsky, age 83, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Aster Estates, Great Bend, Kansas. Betty was born December 13, 1941 in Ingram, Arkansas to Cloys William and Nova Neaomi (Hayes) Bishop and was the oldest of 3 children including Paul Bishop and Wilma “Willie” (Bishop) Ellis. Betty spent her childhood in the Timken, Kansas area and graduated from Bison Rural High School in 1960. She had 1 child – Michael D. Mitchell.
Betty worked retail in the Great Bend area including Sears, Roebuck and Company and several other businesses. She married John Chlumsky in 1969. Together, they started Chlumsky Liquor Mart in the mid-1970’s. She worked at the store through its closing in 2022. Betty was a member of the Church of Christ in Great Bend and enjoyed many friends she made along the way. Betty was an avid cook with many of her friends and family enjoying her wonderful meals. She also loved to read and follow the news and politics.
Survivors include her son, Mike Mitchell and his wife Karen of Ellinwood, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents; brother Paul Bishop; sister Willie Ellis; nieces Tammy Bishop, Cherie Bishop and Robin Nibarger
Honoring Betty’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation and there will be no service at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the Golden Belt Humane Society in care of Charter Funerals.
