LOS ANGELES (AP) — Five of the six children of former Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss still intend to sell their remaining minority ownership of the NBA team despite the opposition of their sister, Jeanie. Johnny, Jimmy, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss reiterated their stance Tuesday in a statement issued to ESPN, saying they remain united in their decision. The five Buss siblings say they've voted to sell the family trust’s remaining 17.8% stake to new owners Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. Jeanie Buss announced her intention to fight back against the plan later through a letter from her attorney, Adam Streisand.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers matched baseball’s modern-era record for the biggest shutout, beating the Seattle Mariners 22-0 on Tuesday night behind three-run homers from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton and Luis Lara and a two-run shot by Jake Bauers. The major league-best Brewers matched a franchise record for runs in a game. Since 1901, the only previous 22-0 shutouts were by Pittsburgh over the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 16, 1975 and by Cleveland over the New York Yankees on Aug. 31, 2004. Kyle Hamilton allowed two hits in five innings, and three relievers followed, with catcher Gary Sánchez working the ninth. The Brewers scored nine times in the eighth against Mariners infielder Leo Rivas.
GENEVA (AP) — Norway’s soccer federation president accuses FIFA of using fear tactics after the removal of a senior official who opposed FIFA leader Gianni Infantino’s World Cup sell-off plan. Lise Klaveness calls the firing of FIFA’s chief operating officer Kevin Lamour “unacceptable.” Lamour was dismissed after criticizing Infantino’s $20 billion private equity project. Klaveness urges FIFA leaders to resist damaging orders. Lamour’s exit intensifies a crisis for Infantino, who faces backlash from UEFA and other soccer bodies. Klaveness emphasizes the need for accountability and governance in FIFA’s leadership.
Texas led all teams with four players named to the preseason Associated Press All-America team and the Southeastern Conference had 14 of the 27 first-team selections. Carson Kelly led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to left off Trevor Richards before Bregman delivered the Cubs’ MLB-leading 13th walk-off win of the season and eighth straight victory over the White Sox at Wrigley Field. Crow-Armstrong led off with a home run, his 31st, for the second straight game and sixth time this season, homering in consecutive at-bats after his walk-off shot Monday.
NEW YORK (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. favors robbing homers over hitting them. Tatis’ glove and bat were on display Tuesday night in a 5-2 win over the Mets as the 27-year-old robbed New York’s Francisco Lindor of a grand slam in between hitting two homers. Tatis hit the first pitch from New York’s Zac Thornton 452 feet into the second deck in left field before adding a two-run homer off Thornton in the fifth. He has 15 homers after opening the season without a longball in his first 238 at-bats. But Tatis’ biggest contribution in the game came in the field in the second inning, when reached over the wall in in right field and pulled back Lindor’s potential slam.
DENVER (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run shot to reach 30 homers for the sixth straight season and Freddie Freeman had two hits and two RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6. Teoscar Hernandez had a triple and double, and Tommy Edman doubled twice as the Dodgers broke out of an offensive slump in Denver. Los Angeles scored 10 runs in the four-game series against Milwaukee over the weekend. Against Colorado, the Dodgers have scored 18 runs on 24 hits with four homers, including three by Ohtani, in the first two games of the three-game set.
LAND O’ LAKES, Fla. (AP) — Bill Rasmussen, who co-founded cable TV sports giant ESPN, has died at the age of 93. ESPN historian Mike Soltys says Rasmussen died Tuesday at his Florida home from the effects of Parkinson’s disease. Rasmussen and his son Scott came up with the idea of a network carrying sports around the clock, and it would revolutionize Americans’ TV-watching habits. ESPN debuted in 1979. But the Rasmussens didn’t stick around long. They were forced out after only a year by ESPN majority owner Getty Oil. Bill Rasmussen and ESPN were estranged until 1999, when company executives invited him to the 20th anniversary celebration. Rasmussen was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2025.
A player development instructor for the San Diego Padres has been detained by U.S. immigration officials. Oswaldo Pirela is a catching coordinator in the Padres’ minor league system. His sister says the 34-year-old Venezuelan was arrested Sunday while on a work trip for the club. The Padres said in a statement that the team was aware of the arrest and was trying to gather more details. Daniela Pirela says her brother has lived in U.S. for 12 years and has followed the law. The Department of Homeland Security said Oswaldo Pirela entered the country legally in 2014 and was granted permission to stay until 2018. He then stayed beyond that.
