KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, rookie Jaylen Watson returned an interception 99 yards for the go-ahead fourth-quarter score, and the Kansas City Chiefs held on to beat the Los Angeles Chargers 27-24. Mahomes finished with 235 yards passing, and Jerick McKinnon and Justin Watson hauled in the TD passes for the Chiefs. Kansas City fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter and spent most of the game playing catch-up. Justin Herbert finished with 334 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Chargers. The Chiefs improved to 2-0 and lead the AFC West.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The hallmark of the early Bill Snyder teams at Kansas State was a dominating defense. Turns out that’s becoming the hallmark of the early teams under Chris Klieman, too. The Wildcats opened the season with one of the handful of shutouts across Division I, a 34-0 victory over South Dakota that was even more lopsided than the final score. And they followed up with a 42-12 blowout of former Big 12 rival Missouri in which the only TD allowed came on an untimed down to finish the game. Next up is Tulane before a showdown at No. 6 Oklahoma in two weeks.
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor coach Dave Aranda reminded his players about having energy and great execution. It's a message for the 17th-ranked Bears going into their non-conference finale Saturday at home against Texas State, and after a double-overtime loss at future Big 12 foe BYU. The Bears had 14 penalties against BYU after they had none in a win against the Cougars last year. Baylor also averaged only 2.9 yards on 52 rushing attempts. Texas State became an FBS team in 2012 and is 0-9 against Top 25 teams. Those losses were by an average margin of nearly 34 points.
UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma State has climbed to No. 8 in the AP Top 25, and although the Cowboys have had some rough moments, they are winning. That’s more than can be said for many other teams that entered the season with playoff aspirations. Oklahoma State is in a strong position after a 34-17 victory over Arizona State and looks to keep the momentum going in their final non-conference tune-up for Big 12 play.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The idea behind scheduling the home-and-home series between Oklahoma and Nebraska was to allow fans and former players to bask in the nostalgia of one of college football’s greatest rivalries. In the big picture, it will be more about looking forward than celebrating the past when the teams meet Saturday. The game is the first since Nebraska fired Scott Frost. Mickey Joseph takes over as interim head coach. For sixth-ranked Oklahoma, this is an opportunity to polish things up before a challenging start to Big 12 play next week against Kansas State.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State’s defense has experienced talent. The 16th-ranked Wolfpack will need that to handle Texas Tech’s national-best passing attack on Saturday. The Red Raiders are averaging 411 yards passing through their first two games. They also have scored 96 points under first-year coach Joey McGuire. They're coming off a double-overtime win against Houston despite losing their top quarterback to an opening-game injury. N.C. State has allowed 23 points in two games. The Wolfpack brought back 10 starters from last year's unit, which ranked among the best in the Bowl Subdivision ranks.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson led the Sooners to a win over Nebraska in what was dubbed “Game of the Century II” back in 1987. Thompson, one of masters of Barry Switzer’s wishbone offense, had 21 carries for 126 yards that day, and Oklahoma clinched the Big 8 title and a chance to play for the national title in the Orange Bowl. Now, 35 years later, his son, Casey, will be Nebraska’s quarterback against the Sooners in the same venue.
UNDATED (AP) — Kansas is 2-0 for the first time since 2011. The Jayhawks are scoring more than 52 points a game. They will try and continue their early success in a visit to Houston on Saturday. The Cougars look to rebound after dropping a 33-30 two overtime thriller at Texas Tech last week.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Carlos Correa’s solo home run in the first inning and Nick Gordon’s two-run shot in the second gave the Minnesota Twins enough to hang on for a 3-2 victory to finish a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals. The Twins pulled within four games of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central race after allowing only 13 hits in the series. They had five relievers throw scoreless innings. Minnesota is 12-4 against Kansas City this season. The Twins hit the road for five games in Cleveland this weekend.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nick Senzel and Aristides Aquino hit solo home runs and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 to snap a six-game losing streak. The loss cut the Cardinals’ lead in the National League Central to 7 1/2 games over the idle Milwaukee Brewers. St. Louis loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on two singles and walk before pulling within a run on a sacrifice fly by Albert Pujols. Alexis Diaz then got pinch-hitter Cory Dickerson to ground out to end the game and earn his seventh save. Miles Mikolas (11-12) give up three runs in six innings. Cincinnati starter Chase Anderson (1-3) gave up one hit in five innings.
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball celebrated its 21st annual Roberto Clemente Day on Thursday, with festivities centered in New York where the Mets hosted the Hall of Fame outfielder’s former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Clemente died in a plane crash at age 38 attempting to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua on New Year’s Eve 1972. To mark the 50th anniversary year of that tragedy, more than a dozen winners of baseball’s treasured Roberto Clemente Award for philanthropy and playing excellence joined Clemente family members at Citi Field for the pregame ceremony.
UNDATED (AP) — Roger Federer is leaving tennis after more than two decades as a pro player with a style that rarely betrayed the effort behind his mastery. He won 20 Grand Slam titles and once reached 10 consecutive major finals and built enduring rivalries with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Federer helped bring his sport around the world and played against and beat top players from various generations. He was not afraid to reinvent himself and tinker with his racket or his style. His departure comes shortly after Serena Williams played what is expected to be the last tournament of her illustrious career.
