MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards had 16 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter to help the Minnesota Timberwolves even their second-round NBA playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs with a 114-109 victory following the stunning ejection of Victor Wembanyama early in the second quarter of Game 4. Naz Reid took the fateful elbow to the neck from a frustrated Wembanyama and finished with 15 points and nine rebounds to help the Timberwolves finish strong after some shaky stretches. Dylan Harper and De’Aaron Fox each scored 24 points as the Spurs guards picked up the baton after their star was tossed.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was ejected for throwing an elbow out of frustration at the throat of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid early in the second quarter of Game 4 of their rugged second-round NBA playoff series. Wembanyama was whistled for an offensive foul after he grabbed an offensive rebound and was swarmed by Reid and Jaden McDaniels. The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama struck Reid with excessive contact above the neck and drew a Flagrant 2 foul that comes with an automatic ejection. Wembanyama had four points, four rebounds and three fouls in 13 minutes.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and the New York Knicks are back in the Eastern Conference finals, tying the NBA postseason record with 25 3-pointers in front of a raucous crowd rooting for the road team and rolling past the Philadelphia 76ers 144-114 on Sunday to sweep the second-round series. Deuce McBride hit seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points. Brunson had 22 points and Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns each scored 17 in the Knicks’ latest lopsided playoff victory. The Knicks advanced to the East finals for the second straight season and will play the winner of the Cleveland-Detroit series.
CHICAGO (AP) — The league’s worst team this season is getting the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. The Washington Wizards won the draft lottery on Sunday and are poised to pick first overall for the first time since choosing John Wall in that spot in 2010. Wall was the Wizards’ on-stage representative for the lottery. Washington had a 14% chance of winning No. 1, tied with Brooklyn and Indiana for the best odds. The Wizards had basically a 50-50 chance of getting either a top-four pick or the No. 5 spot. Utah will pick No. 2, Memphis will pick No. 3 and Chicago will pick No. 4.
Arsenal has stayed in control of the Premier League title race by beating relegation-threatened West Ham 1-0 thanks to an 83rd-minute goal by Leandro Trossard and a dramatic late VAR call. Arsenal restored its five-point lead over second-place Manchester City and will clinch its first league title since 2004 by winning its final two games, at home to Burnley and away to Crystal Palace. Trossard scored off a shot that took a couple of slight deflections and found the bottom corner. Callum Wilson thought he’d equalized for West Ham following a corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time. After a long delay, the goal was ruled out for a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Watched by its grieving coach, Barcelona has won its second straight Spanish league title and 29th overall with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou. Goals by Marcus Rashford in the ninth minute and Ferran Torres in the 18th gave Barcelona the victory and an insurmountable 14-point advantage over its fierce rival with three rounds remaining in La Liga. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was in the dugout for Sunday’s clasico following the death of his father, which Barcelona announced hours before kickoff. Players from both teams wore black armbands and there was a moment of silence before kickoff.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — With an impressive late-race charge, Shane van Gisbergen remained NASCAR’s king of the road courses Sunday at Watkins Glen International. Starting from the pole position, the Trackhouse Racing driver scored his seventh Cup Series victory — all on road or street courses — by leading 74 of 100 laps in his No. 97 Chevrolet. Pitting from the lead under green with 24 laps remaining, van Gisbergen emerged in 24th and nearly 30 seconds behind leader Ty Gibbs. The New Zealand native needed only 17 laps to retake the lead, winning by 7.288 seconds over Michael McDowell. Gibbs finished third.
The Dallas Cowboys were hopeful the World Cup final would end up in their stadium. They settled for the consolation prize of more matches than any of the 16 sites in the event co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. There are nine matches at the retractable roof venue with the giant video board hanging over the field in suburban Arlington, capped by a semifinal on July 14. The first match is exactly a month earlier, Japan vs. the Netherlands on June 14. World Cup heavyweights Argentina and England both have matches at Dallas Stadium, normally known as AT&T Stadium.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan shot 2-under 69 on Sunday to earn a two-shot win over Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard at the Truist Championship for his first victory on the PGA Tour. Reitan, who chose golf over soccer at a young age, won twice previously on the European Tour. He finished at 15-under 269. He called the feeling of winning his first PGA Tour event “unreal.” Alex Fitzpatrick, the third-round leader, finished three shots back after shooting 73.
The Carolina Hurricanes are back in the Eastern Conference final for the third time in four seasons. They have plenty of time to rest and recharge before taking on that familiar roadblock. Carolina beat Philadelphia in overtime on Saturday to close out their second-round series in four games. That made Carolina the first team to sweep their first two series since the league went to best-of-seven series in all four rounds in 1987. Carolina will play the Montreal-Buffalo winner. That series is set to go until at least Thursday. Carolina had nearly a week off after sweeping Ottawa in Round 1.
