The Hoisington Cardinals are once again hosting for the first leg of their playoff run on Friday, as they get set for Clay Center. The Cardinals are used to being in the playoffs under head coach Zac Baird, who's as ready as anyone to get the postseason underway. Coach Baird says that the way to advance in the postseason is to continue paying attention to the little things.
"It's all the summer, all the practices, all the games up to this point, is trying to prepare you for this postseason run. Obviously, it's not going to be easy. It never is. We're going to have to continue to get better. And we can't let the every-day drills we do become mundane. That's the biggest thing. We have to have laser-like focus, and we've got to recognize that we still have areas where we have to get better.
"If we can get better in those areas, we'll have as long a run as we possibly can. And if we don't, if we let the everyday stuff get mundane, that'll be the thing that ends up getting us knocked out of the tournament. But, I'm excited. When you hit the postseason, there's a charge in the battery, so to speak. You can kind of feel that.
"Usually you'll see some nerves week 1 of postseason. We can't let that get to us. The preparation doesn't change. The excitement probably does, the urgency maybe a little bit. But preparation is preparation. That routine does not change."
Hoisington and Clay Center will kick off at 7 on Friday, with coverage starting at 6:30 on 100.7 Eagle Country
