The Barton County Commission welcomed the Great Bend Bat Cats Baseball Club during this week’s meeting, recognizing the organization’s 10th year of bringing baseball, community pride, and affordable family entertainment to Barton County.

Commissioners adopted Proclamation 2026-10, officially recognizing Tuesday, July 7, 2026, as Great Bend Bat Cats Baseball Club Day in Barton County.

The proclamation honors the Bat Cats for their commitment to youth, community, and local sports. Over the past 10 years, the organization has brought student athletes from 32 states and eight countries to Al Burns Memorial Field in Great Bend, giving players the opportunity to develop their skills, gain exposure, and continue pursuing their dreams in baseball.

The Bat Cats have also become a strong part of the local community. With an estimated 8,000 people attending free games throughout a typical home season, the team provides an affordable way for families to enjoy baseball while also supporting the local businesses and sponsors that help make the organization possible.

During the meeting, Head Coach and General Manager Roger Ward thanked the Commission for the recognition and spoke about the continued growth of the organization. Ward shared that the team is having a strong summer and praised the players not only for their performance on the field, but for the way they represent themselves, the organization, and the community.

Ward also recognized the work happening behind the scenes, noting that board members, volunteers, coaches, sponsors, and supporters help make the Bat Cats experience what it is today. He emphasized that the organization’s success is the result of year-round effort and community support.

Commissioners commended Ward, Assistant Coach Zach Dobbins, Assistant Coach Derek Pomeroy, the players, board members, and everyone involved with the organization for helping move the Bat Cats into 10 years of historic operation.

The Commission also encouraged residents to support the Bat Cats, attend home games, and continue supporting the local businesses that help make the program possible.

As the Bat Cats celebrate 10 years in Great Bend, their impact continues to reach far beyond the baseball field. The organization has created opportunities for student athletes, strengthened community pride, and become a summer tradition for families across Barton County.
