KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ Travis Kelce was held out of Wednesday’s final workout and listed as questionable for Thursday night’s season opener against Detroit because of a knee injury. The All-Pro tight end hyperextended his knee during Tuesday's practice. Kelce was the only player to carry an injury designation for the Super Bowl champions, who will be raising their latest banner before the first game of the NFL season. That means that wide receiver Kadarius Toney and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, both of whom have dealt with knee injuries throughout training camp, are expected to be in the lineup.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will try to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions for the first time since the Patriots pulled off the feat nearly two decades ago when they open the NFL season against Detroit on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. But it won't be easy given that All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones is in the midst of a holdout and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce is dealing with a hyperextended knee that he sustained in practice on Tuesday. The Lions are hardly a pushover, either. They won eight of their last 10 games last season and added plenty of playmakers on both sides of the ball, including David Montgomery from the Bears and fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs with a first-round draft pick.
UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers is among three athletes from his school and two from Iowa who have pleaded guilty to underage gambling. The five were among more than a dozen from both schools facing criminal charges after an investigation of illegal sports wagering. All originally were charged with tampering with records. The reduced charge carries a $650 fine and ends the cases against the five. Also taking the plea were former Iowa State offensive lineman Dodge Sauser, current offensive lineman Jacob Remsburg, former Iowa kicker Aaron Blom and former Iowa baseball player Gehrig Christensen.
UNDATED (AP) — Since splitting up 11 years ago, No. 11 Texas and No. 23 Texas A&M have traveled similarly underwhelming paths. They will be reunited next year when Texas joins the SEC so this is the last season where the rivalry plays out vicariously. This weekend is another opportunity for both to make a statement. Texas visits No. 3 Alabama for the return match of last season’s one-point victory for the Crimson Tide. Texas A&M has a road game against Miami.
UNDATED (AP) — Deion Sanders and his Colorado Buffaloes stampeded to the forefront of college football with their dizzying opening performance at TCU. It will be a grand stage for their home opener in Boulder on Saturday. The Buffs are in the AP Top 25 this week at No. 22 and the opponent is former longtime Big Eight and Big 12 rival Nebraska. No. 11 Texas visits No. 3 Alabama in one of the best matchups of the week. Heisman Trophy candidate Michael Penix Jr. of Washington faces Tulsa. No. 23 Texas A&M visits Miami in another game of interest.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andrew Vaughn doubled, homered, drove in two runs and scored two as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-4 to snap a five-game losing streak. Elvis Andrus had four hits, and Yoan Moncada and Oscar Colas also went deep for the White Sox. Chicago starter Touki Toussaint (3-7) gave up two runs and two hits with six strikeouts over six innings. Bryan Shaw got the last three outs for his second save of the season. Nelson Velazquez and Edward Olivares homered for Kansas City, which had won consecutive games for the first time since winning seven straight July 28 to Aug. 4. The Royals have lost 22 of their last 30.
ATLANTA (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt, Masyn Winn, Willson Contreras and Nolan Gorman went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals hit four home runs for the second straight game and beat the MLB-leading Atlanta Braves 11-6 to take the first two games of the three-game series. Gorman hit his 27th homer of the season, one day after hitting two home runs as the NL Central-worst Cards beat the Braves 10-6. Dakota Hudson (6-1) outpitched NL Cy Young Award hopeful Spencer Strider, allowing three runs and seven hits in five innings. Strider (16-5) lasted just 2 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits, including a home run. Strider had won his last four starts. Matt Olson hit his MLB-leading 46th home run, and Austin Riley also homered for the Braves.
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona fell into a four-run hole before its first at-bat, not an ideal situation after losing to a last-place team the night before. The Diamondbacks didn’t panic, didn’t try to get it back all at once. They kept their same approach at the plate and the hits kept coming. Alek Thomas homered and drove in five runs, Tommy Pham had three RBIs and the Diamondbacks overcame the early four-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies 12-5 on Wednesday. Thomas hit a three-run homer off Chris Flexen (1-7) in the third and a two-run double in the fourth. Pham had three hits, including a two-run double, and scored three runs.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Julio Urías was placed on administrative leave indefinitely by Major League Baseball, three days after the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher was arrested on suspicion of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant. The leave was imposed under baseball’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy adopted by MLB and the players’ union in 2015 and can be the first step toward a suspension. Players are paid but cannot play while on leave. Urías was arrested late Sunday night by Department of Public Safety officers in Exposition Park, south of downtown Los Angeles.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — This seemed so far away in the beginning. There was a week of training camp in Las Vegas for USA Basketball to get through, then a week in Spain, then a week in Abu Dhabi, the group stage of the World Cup, then the second round, then the quarterfinals. They’ve flown 14,000 miles, eaten more than 100 meals away from home, played 11 games, posed for countless photos. All for this. The medal round at the Basketball World Cup is here. The U.S. plays Germany on Friday night in the World Cup semifinals with a berth in Sunday’s gold-medal game awaiting the winner.
