A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held outside the new Great Bend Justice Center Friday morning. On Monday morning, traffic changes for the area around 12th Street and Baker Avenue officially went into effect. Public Works Director Jason Cauley said with the placement of signage, Baker Avenue, from 11th Street to 12th Street, is now a one-way street.
"That's to accommodate the increase in traffic and the potential for safety in that area," he said. "It's for northbound traffic. That was to allow citizens who live on that block to still be able to park in front of their residences without any difficulty."
Southbound drivers will need to make a right or left turn onto 12th Street now at the intersection. Portable stop signs had been in place on 12th Street at the intersection, and those will be replaced by regular signs this week.
"There will be a stop sign on the west side of the road, which would be the police station, and there will be one on the east side of the road by the radio station," Cauley said.
The new Justice Center will house both the Great Bend Police Department and Great Bend Municipal Court.
