Sister Jolene Geier, 84, died Sept. 14, 2022, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace motherhouse in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 1, 1938, in Garden City, the daughter of Anthony and Josephine Lavenstein Geier.
She entered the Dominican Sisters community in 1952 and pronounced vows in 1955. In 2020, she celebrated 65 years of religious profession. Sister Jolene began her ministry as an elementary school teacher, serving in Kansas and Colorado schools. A call to pastoral ministry took her to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital as well as Sacred Heart Parish, both in Larned. In the 1970s, she began developing what would become the Associates of the Kansas Dominicans. She also served the congregation as justice promoter. Her final years in ministry were spent on the staff of Heartland Center for Spirituality, Great Bend.
Sister Jolene was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by brothers Alan, Danny and Larry Geier, sisters Barbara Jean Schartz, Katherine Rhodes and Lola Wilson, several nieces and nephews, as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
A Wake Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Sister Jolene may be sent to Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219-2098.
