As the Kansas State High School Activities Association voted in favor of continuing winter sports as normally scheduled and not pushing the season off until mid-January, there will still be differences and challenges facing high schools across the state.
The biggest difference will be the lack of fans or spectators for contests through Jan. 28, 2021. Those allowed in the facilities for games include players, coaches, managers, press, camera operators, cheerleaders, pep band members, dance line members and clock operators.
Great
Bend High School Activities Director David Meter says a video stream will be
available for those wanting to watch.
"We plan to livestream all the events, even our freshman and junior varsity competitions," said Meter. "We'll do that for swimming, wrestling, basketball and bowling. We'll try to get the exposure out to our general public."
The YouTube channel to watch all the live streams is under GBHS Athletics.
Eagle Radio will also broadcast all the basketball games on 104.3 FM and
greatbendpost.com.
Meter says larger tournaments and meets are going to the
wayside, as the Panther boys basketball team will have their mid-season tournament
in January, the Bluestem Classic in El Dorado, altered.
"They have split it into two different tournaments, with two different quads," said Meter. "We'll be playing at Kapaun Mt. Carmel to play Wichita Trinity, Goddard and Kapaun. There will be two games there each night on Thursday, Friday and Saturday."
The Lady Panthers basketball team will go to three different sites each evening
for their mid-season tournament.
The break from practices and competition over the Christmas break was also
extended. There will be no practices or competition for any sport between
Dec. 23 and Jan. 3.
