United Way's Box of Love project returns for seniors

Posted Dec 28, 2023 10:00 PM

The United Way of Central Kansas, in partnership with TruStage,  announced the return of its annual Box of Love project, an initiative designed to bring Valentine's Day surprises to homebound seniors in Barton and Pawnee Counties. This year, the organization aims to deliver joy to 400 seniors through this project.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to TruStage who has been a supporter since the start of this project," said Charell Owings, UWCK Executive Director. "Their unwavering support makes a meaningful impact, and we are truly grateful for the kindness and compassion they show in the community."

For businesses looking to make a positive impact, United Way of Central Kansas invites sponsorships for the Box of Love project. Businesses can contribute through cash donations or by donating items to be included in the boxes.

Box of Love will be delivered to seniors who receive Meals on Wheels or ElderCare Home Services. UWCK also partners with local senior centers and nursing homes to deliver these uplifting gifts to elderly residents across Barton & Pawnee counties. Individuals also have the opportunity to purchase a Box of Love for a friend or family member for $10, which includes delivery to their doorstep on Valentine’s Day.

United Way of Central Kansas is proud to collaborate with daycare centers, schools, youth organizations, and individuals to add a personal touch to each Box of Love. Homemade Valentine's Day cards created by these partners will be included in every package.

"The Box of Love project is a wonderful way for the community to come together and show our appreciation for our homebound seniors," said Owings. "It's a small gesture that can make a significant impact on the lives of those who may feel isolated."

In addition to homemade cards, the boxes will be filled with items that are both fun and useful for the recipients. The goal is to bring joy and practicality to those who receive the boxes, making their Valentine's Day extra special. Sponsor, The University of Kansas Health System-Great Bend Campus, provides support for this project with a donation as well as special gift for each recipient.

If your business would like to be included in the Box of Love project, we encourage you to reach out to the United Way of Central Kansas by Jan. 19. Donated items are requested by February 1st to ensure timely preparation of the packages.
