Barton men's track & field team wins National Championship

The Barton Community College men's track and field team captured the College's 58th National team title Thursday by tying for first place of the 2021 NJCAA Outdoor National Championships held in Levelland, Texas.

Trailing by three points into the final 4x400m Relay with South Plains in third just two points behind the Cougars, Barton's second place finish in the race with the Texans winning the baton handling four trips around the oval gave the two programs the Co-National Champion fitting end to the three-day meetat 101 points.

Cloud County, who held the lead but didn't have a relay team in the finals, fell to the third spot as the defending champion from 2019 finished with 96 points.

On the women's side, Barton placed 5th overall with host South Plains winning with 110.33 points.

The championship is the 9th title for Cougar history in the outdoor season. The tie is just the second time in the NJCAA two teams have locked up for the title at the men's outdoor national championship, the first coming in 2007 between South Plains and Central Arizona.
