United Way of Central Kansas is proud to announce the launch of Bank On Central Kansas, a new initiative designed to connect individuals and families with safe, affordable, and accessible banking products. In partnership with the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund) and local financial institutions including Equity Bank, First Kansas Bank, and Sunflower Bank, this program is a critical step toward increasing financial inclusion and long-term stability in Central Kansas.
In Kansas, 4.3% of residents are unbanked and 14.7% are underbanked—with the highest rates among households earning under $30,000. That means those with the least are often paying the most in fees.
“We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to build a stable financial future,” said Charell Owings, Executive Director of United Way of Central Kansas. “By removing the barriers that keep people from opening and using bank accounts, we’re helping families keep more of their hard-earned money and build relationships with trusted local financial partners.”
Unbanked individuals often spend up to 5% of their income on alternative financial services—money that could be used for savings, groceries, or transportation. These certified accounts meet national standards set by the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund and are designed specifically for individuals who have never had a bank account or who may have been turned away in the past.
If you are currently using check cashers, payday lenders, or pawn shops to access your money or if you have you been turned away from a traditional bank account-Bank On Central Kansas may be for you.
