HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University will be holding a retirement celebration for women's basketball coach Tony Hobson on Saturday (Apr. 15) at the Robbins Center. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
The gathering will be a celebration of Hobson's 31-year career as a head women's basketball coach at the college level, which included time at Cloud County (Kan.) Community College, Barton (Kan.) Community College, and Hastings College (Neb.) prior to coaching Fort Hays State University. Hobson amassed a record of 745-227 in his career, including a 332-121 mark over the final 15 years (2008-2023) that made him the winningest coach in Fort Hays State program history. He guided Hastings College to three NAIA National Championships (2002, 2003, 2006) prior to his arrival at FHSU. Hobson guided teams to 13 conference championships overall.
The Tigers won six MIAA Championships under Hobson's guidance, which included four regular season titles (2015, 2019, 2021, 2022) and two tournament titles (2019, 2022). He was the MIAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year four times (2015, 2016, 2019, 2021). Hobson was also the WBCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2019 and was named the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Four-Year College Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2022 during his time at FHSU.
