There are a lot of irons in the fire currently for the City of Great
Bend when it comes to quality of life projects. Brit Spaugh Park improvements,
splash pad, paintball course, just to name a few. A smaller project Great Bend
wants to accomplish this year is to separate the dog park at Veterans Memorial
Park for a “large dog” area and a “small dog” area.
The initial plans called for extending the dog park to the north for a separate
gated area for small dogs. Great Bend City Council member Cory Urban said the
current enclosure more than big enough to divide up.
"I think you take the existing park, that's already irrigated, and you take the north 10 or 15 feet and go one fence down," said Urban. "You don't have to expand. Take what we have and compartmentalize it. That park is way bigger than any dog is using all the time. For those little dogs, that is going to be more than enough."
The .15% quality of life sales tax planned for $10,000 for the dog park improvements.
A quote from Eldridge Fencing of $12,875 for approximately 500 feet of fencing
was made for the original plan. Placing the small dog area in the existing park
will cut down on the cost for the 4-foot tall chain link fence.
