The Great Bend Public Works department was tasked with finding a street project for 2020 and have identified a large section of Washington Street, Morton Street and two blocks of Stone Street as their focus this year.

Repairs to be done:
Washington (between 5th & 12) - 2" mill and overlay
Washington (between 24th & 29th or Quivira Avenue) - edge mill and 2" overlay
Morton (between 21st to 24th) - 2" overlay
Stone (between 10th and 12th) - rebuilt.

Assistant Public Works Director Jason Cauley says the city has saved money maintaining these roads in the past.

"We saved a previous amount by doing full-depth patches ourselves in areas needed the base reconstructed," said Cauley.

Great Bend sent out four invitations to bid on the project and Venture Corporation provided the only response. The Great Bend City Council approved the $569,010 proposal from Venture for the 2020 street resurfacing project. The funds for the project will come from the ¼ cent sales tax balance designed for street repairs.

Cauley says the two-block rebuild on Stone Street makes up nearly half of the project cost.
