You can get a free bicycle helmet and learn about bicycle safety at the Barton County Fair Saturday morning. The Family Fun Bike Ride is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Expo grounds west of Great Bend.

Participants will be divided into age groups and stations will be set up for age-appropriate activities. Everyone can participate in an obstacle course, learn about hand signals and how to decorate their bike.

Great Bend Police Chief Steven Haulmark will help register up to 40 bicycles during the event. Having a bicycle registration helps you identify your bike if it is ever stolen. Todd Van Skike from Golden Belt Bicycle will help with minor adjustments including safety checks. He will also provide a few Strider bikes for small children to try out.

Members of the Pilot Club will distribute the free helmets on a first-come, first-serve basis. They will also help properly fit the helmets on each participant.

The event is jointly sponsored by the Cottonwood Extension District, the Barton County Fair Association, the Pilot Club and the Be Well Barton County Task Force.
