Just to the west of Larned sits an entire museum and library that contains
thousands of artifacts that share the history of the Santa Fe Trail era, early
Pawnee County and settlement in the early 1900s. Santa Fe Trail Center Director
Seth McFarland said the museum offers a variety of options for school field
trips.
"We can customize a tour specifically for the teachers and their classes," said McFarland. "We also a regional history of central Kansas and focusing on the Santa Fe Trail."
Located on 10 acres, just west of the Fort Larned National Historic Site, the
Santa Fe Trail Center partners with the Fort to provide a full day of
activities. The partnership also provides access to the “Open Outdoors for Kids
Grant” which offers funding for schools visiting the park.
"They offer a grant for tours," said McFarland. "That helps provide bus transportation funds. A lot of the distant schools get a deal where they can benefit from both sites in the same day."
The Santa Fe Trail Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5
p.m.
