The Barton County Historical Society and Humanities Kansas presents Flour Power by Gene Chávez on Monday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the museum in the Ray Schulz Memorial Library. As part of Hispanic Heritage month the presentation uncovers the rich history of Mexican immigration to Kansas during the Mexican Revolution and the journey of the humble but important tortilla. Many Mexican immigrants made their way to Kansas to raise families and work in the railroad, as well as the agricultural, industrial, and hospitality industries. A cultural offshoot resulted as many restaurants and home cooks substituted wheat flour tortillas for their signature dishes.
Admission is free to all who wish to attend the program thanks to Humanities Kansas. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m. Light refreshments are provided and the bottled water for attendees is provided by Wheatland Electric. The Barton County Historical Society is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday all year and has summer hours from April to October, from 1-4 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday.
