Not everyone is cut out for hardcore, marathon training sessions at the gym. The Great Bend Rec is offering some fitness alternatives for those that would like to remain active in a less-intense manner. Certified Instructor Dixie Divis is handling a few of those activities, including a pair of suspension training classes that began this week.
"Suspension training uses your body weight for your resistance, so it's very adapatable," Divis said. "You can make it as hard or as easy as you want it to be, that way it's for everybody. It helps with core stability, it helps with flexibility, it helps with cardio endurance, it helps with balance. It's just a great overall, total body workout."
Bars were installed in one of the gyms at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center at 2715 18th Street in Great Bend. Suspension fitness utilizes straps to accomplish the same exercises possible with free weights. The exercises are low-impact, and a workout can be customized to any individual.
"We can modify anything," said Divis. "It's total body weight. You can add jumps if you wish. You don't have to do the jumps. We can make it work for anybody."
Besides the fitness aspect, small classes mean personalized attention, and there's music and plenty of laughs. "We're very low-key," Divis said. "Right now, it's a small class. We're non-judgmental and actually have a lot of fun."
The Rec is still taking registrations for several classes. Divis instructs the Monday and Wednesday class from 5:15 to 5:45 a.m. Drop-ins are welcome to try the class before registering if space is available. Divis also instructs a midday stretch and strength suspension class with spots still available Monday through Thursday from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Registration is $25 for the early-morning class, and $35 for the midday class. Divis also instructs a renewed yoga class from 6 to 6:45 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. Registration is $25.
