On July 23, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to a report of a burglary in the 2200 block of Jefferson. They were further informed that the suspect vehicle was fleeing at a high rate of speed.
A deputy with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was able to locate the suspect vehicle on Main Street, traveling southbound out of the city and still being operated at a high rate of speed. The deputy was able to stop the vehicle in the 100 block of South 281 Highway. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Mathyas Montoya, 20, of Great Bend, initially refused to comply with lawful orders from the deputy, but was subsequently taken into custody without incident.
After completing an investigation, officers with the Great Bend Police Department discovered Montoya had entered an occupied residence and walked out with a firearm. Officers and deputies on scene were able to recover the stolen firearm. Montoya was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked and held for aggravated burglary and interference with law enforcement, in lieu of bond.
