SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Logan Webb pitched five-hit ball over seven scoreless innings to win for the first time in a month, and the San Francisco Giants stretched their winning streak to five with a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Webb (struck out a season-high nine and walked three. He had been 0-1 in five starts since a May 13 win at St. Louis. Camilo Doval pitched the ninth for his ninth save. Kansas City has lost 12 of 16. At 20-41, the Royals have the worst record in the major leagues.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas was one strike from a no-hitter when he gave up a double to Cal Mitchell with two outs in the ninth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1 to sweep a doubleheader. Mitchell drove a 2-2 curveball over the head of Gold Glove center fielder Harrison Bader and just beyond his outstretched mitt as he tried to make a running catch with his back to home plate. The ball bounced on the warning track 383 feet from the plate and over the wall in straightaway center for a ground-rule double. The hit came on the 129th pitch from Mikolas, most in the majors this season and 14 more than his previous career high set last month. The Pirates lost their ninth straight.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his first start of the season in the series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol made the surprise announcement before the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Pirates on Tuesday. Flaherty had a platelet-rich-plasma injection in his shoulder in early March to combat inflammation. He went 9-2 last season with a 3.22 ERA before the shoulder injury cut his season short. He's had two minor league rehab starts, allowing just one run in seven total innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes walked onto the field for the start of the Kansas City Chiefs’ mandatory three-day minicamp with his right tackle standing off to the side in a bucket hat and his Pro Bowl left tackle nowhere to be found. Lucas Niang was present but didn't work out as he continues to recover from knee surgery. Missing entirely was Orlando Brown Jr., who has yet to sign his franchise tender. The Chiefs and the Pro Bowler are working on a long-term deal and both sides are optimistic that it will get done before the July 15th deadline.

ATLANTA (AP) — Hundreds of college athletes from schools all over the country are in Atlanta this week. They are attending the inaugural NIL Summit. They are learning from companies about how to build their brands. The summit is the first since the NCAA cleared the way for college athletes to earn endorsement money last July. The NCAA was not at the summit and neither were athletic directors from the nation's biggest schools.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — No. 2 Stanford and No. 5 Texas A&M are the highest national seeds remaining in the NCAA baseball tournament heading into the College World Series. Stanford staved off elimination five times to earn a second straight trip to Omaha, Nebraska. The Cardinal has won 22 of their last 24. Texas A&M swept through regionals and super regionals to make the CWS in coach Jim Schlossnagle's first season. The Aggies are among four Southeastern Conference teams in the field. A&M will meet Oklahoma in the CWS opener Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NCAA athletes saw their overall four-year Academic Progress Rate increase to 984, a one-point jump from the most recent data publicly released in May 2020. College sports' largest governing body opted not to release last year's numbers because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Men's basketball finished at 968, up two points from 2020, while baseball, football and women's basketball all remained even with their 2020 averages at 977, 964 and 983.
