NEW YORK (AP) — It was bedlam on Broadway as the New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years, with exuberant celebrations marred by mayhem and violence, including a shooting in Times Square. Outside the team’s Manhattan arena, Madison Square Garden, fans roared as the Knicks rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the Spurs in San Antonio in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night. Soon after, rowdy fans were clashing with police, smashing windows on a police car, climbing scaffolding, light poles and a statue, standing atop school buses in Times Square and trying to hitch a ride on a moving fire truck. The NYPD said there were multiple arrests but wouldn’t have a total until later on Sunday.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The New York Knicks have won the NBA championship for the first time since 1973, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games. Owner James Dolan lifted the trophy, apologizing to New York for the long wait. This marks the end of a 14-year drought for major sports championships in the city. The Knicks' victory is celebrated as a historic moment, with Madison Square Garden set to raise a new banner. Coach Mike Brown, in his first season, led the team to this triumph. The Knicks' win is a significant moment for the franchise and its fans.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Hurricanes are on the brink of winning the Stanley Cup, taking a 3-2 series lead into their game against the Golden Knights. Carolina has a chance to secure their second Cup, the first since coach Rod Brind'Amour captained them to victory 20 years ago. Despite regular-season success, they've struggled to get past the Eastern Conference finals until this year. They defeated Montreal in five games to advance. If they lose Sunday, they still have a chance to win at home in Game 7 on Wednesday. Vegas coach John Tortorella remains confident, anticipating a return to North Carolina.
MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Lewis Hamilton has won his first race since joining Ferrari two years ago while Formula 1 leader Kimi Antonelli broke down at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Hamilton increased his record victory haul to 106 career wins with his first since the Belgian GP in July 2024 while he was still with Mercedes. The seven-time world champion took advantage of fresher tires and a superior pitstop strategy by Ferrari to overtake the pole-sitting George Russell, who finished second. Antonelli had passed his Mercedes teammate Russell when his car ground to a stop on the track with just four laps to go. He had won five races in a row.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump turns 80 on Sunday and celebrates with a unique event: cage fighting on the White House lawn. The UFC is staging seven fights under the Freedom 250 banner to mark Trump’s birthday and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s signing. The event being held amid a 3-month-old war with Iran and rising inflation highlights Trump’s long-standing relationship with UFC CEO Dana White. The fight card being broadcast on Paramount+ includes matchups like Alex Pereira versus Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title. The spectacle is drawing mixed reactions from fans online.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Vinícius Júnior scored an equalizing goal in the 32nd minute to give five-time champion Brazil a 1-1 draw against Morocco in a pulsating, high-profile group match at the World Cup. A semifinalist four years ago, Morocco dominated early, and Ismael Saibari put the African champions ahead in the 21st minute. Brazil, seeking its first World Cup title since 2002, entered the tournament with high expectations and yellow-clad Seleção fans who dominated the crowd of 80,663 at MetLife Stadium became a bit subdued before Vinícius evened the score with a spectacular angled effort.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Jalen Brunson was fully aware of how much money some people spent to see the New York Knicks finally become champions again. Some tickets during the NBA Finals sold for $5,000, some for $50,000, some for probably more. Of course, Brunson parted with more money than any of those fans did. Brunson is now an NBA champion and NBA Finals MVP in large part because of what he did against the San Antonio Spurs in the finals — though, really, his biggest contribution to this title run likely came in 2024, when he left as much as $113 million on the bargaining table to allow the Knicks the financial flexibility they needed to finish building a championship roster.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Victor Wembanyama had to watch the visiting team become champions, again. The Wemby era of the NBA is fully underway, with the 7-foot-4 French star unanimously winning the Defensive Player of the Year award this season, finishing third in the Most Valuable Player balloting and making first-team All-NBA for the first of what could be many times. But the ultimate moment has escaped his grasp for the second time in three years. In 2024, he watched the U.S. celebrate winning Olympic gold at the Paris Olympics. He relived that moment by seeing the New York Knicks celebrating their first championship in 53 years by winning Game 5 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio on Saturday night.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Jalen Brunson and the Comeback Knicks did it again. And now they’re the Champion Knicks. For the first time in 53 years, New York rules the NBA. Brunson scored 45 points, including 13 straight for New York in the fourth quarter, and the Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night. The Knicks won the series 4-1, rallying from double-digit deficits in all four of those victories. The deficit was 16 on Saturday night. Brunson and the Knicks were never fazed.
CHICAGO (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto lost a bid for a no-hitter when Tristan Peters hit a leadoff homer for the Chicago White Sox in the ninth inning. Yamamoto retired his first 23 batters before Chase Meidroth reached on a two-out error on shortstop Mookie Betts in the eighth. Jacob Gonzalez then bounced to second, ending the inning. But Peters connected for his third homer of the season on a 96.6 mph fastball, sending a drive deep to right. After Edgar Quero flied out to center, Yamamoto was replaced by Alex Vesia. The Dodgers then closed out a 7-1 victory over the White Sox
