The 5th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team capitalized with a trio of second half goals in their home opener Friday morning in defeating Jefferson College 3-0 at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Getting back on track, Barton improves to 3-1-0 on the young campaign while keeping Jefferson winless on the year at 0-1-1. The Cougars will get a day off before concluding the Barton Classic on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. kickoff against Trinidad State. The Vikings will return to the Complex on Saturday, taking on Trinidad State in an 11:00 a.m. start against Trinidad State with the Lady Cougars hosting their home opener following against Highland Community College in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
Tied 0-0 at halftime and holding a slight 6-4 edge in shots, the Cougars started to dominate possession early in the second half benefitting behind a 10-15 mph north breeze.
Barton unexpectedly found themselves at a disadvantage just 16:16 into the second half going down a man due to a second yellow card violation. Remaining aggressive on the attack, the Cougars wasted little time with leading goal scorer Maxence Voinier breaking the deadlock 14-seconds ensuing with his fourth of the season on a 35-yard near post-strike fashioned off the quick passing from Arthur Onofre and Justin Gomes.
The Cougars broke through with an insurance marker just 7:40 later, on Diogo Giminez' collegiate first goal, shaping a near post missile coming off Voinier's forced turnover and through ball sent just outside the top of the box.
Giminez laid the game on ice with 12:48 remaining netting his second of the game tapping in Gonzalo Bassa's backside through ball sent back post formed off Arthur Onofre's free-kick cross.
Netminder Gabriel Bergamin improved to 2-0-0 between the pipes rejecting all five shots faced in securing his first collegiate shutout and team's second on the season.
